Out of The Box

Ever since 2018, I have been running with the “graphic designer” label as a way to verbally showcase my talents. Yes, I am a creative problem solver who could totally make you a logo! But to be honest, I always had a hard time accepting that as my niche. Heck, it is even recommended to find your niche WITHIN the graphic design realm, and boy oh boy is that an even bigger struggle!
On my current journey of being a Challenge Fellow, I have been able to experience what it is like to be on a marketing team while working at my host company. In the midst of embracing new, fun and challenging projects, I have learned that there are many aspects to marketing and how much impact creative storytelling has. You would think that someone who has watched Mad Men would have grasped that concept already, but I guess you need to experience it yourself sometimes!
When our cohort had the opportunity to learn more about the mediums of creative storytelling during one of our Leadership Fridays, it made me curious to explore the different avenues of storytelling whether it is written or visual content. Walking away from that day, I couldn’t help but feel like I had put myself into a box by only considering myself a graphic designer. There have been countless times where friends and other individuals I have crossed paths with have shared their passions or goals with me and I BURST with creative ideas to push their vision forward. It did not cross my mind that the visions I had were aspects of creating a story. The issues I was having with establishing my creative identity began to make more sense. I didn’t only want to design visual content, I wanted to be a part of ideating the content into a captivating story. I’m looking forward to developing this skill throughout my time in Challenge Detroit, and am eager to break out of my box to unleash my creative superpowers!

Hello! My name is Eva Morlock. I am a quirky gal who grew up in Birmingham, Michigan. I graduated from Oakland University with a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and a minor in Studio Art. I love hiking and exploring new places, as well as making art that reflects kindness and positivity.
