{"id":122,"date":"2014-04-28T12:24:14","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T12:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/blog\/brandikeeler\/?p=122"},"modified":"2014-04-28T12:24:14","modified_gmt":"2014-04-28T12:24:14","slug":"friend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/friend\/","title":{"rendered":"A Poem About My Friend, Detroit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Friend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who is Detroit?<br \/>\nHave you met her?<br \/>\nDo you know her?<\/p>\n<p>I thought I did.<\/p>\n<p>I met her 25 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin and Angela introduced her to me.<\/p>\n<p>They met her through Betty, Rod, Howard, Mattie, Florine, Andy and a bunch of other folks.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve known her this long and<br \/>\nstill couldn\u2019t tell you her middle name.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t quite know how old she is but she seems to have more gray hair she should at her age.<br \/>\nBut I like how it matches her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know where she went to school.<br \/>\nI don\u2019t know what block she lives on<br \/>\nbut I know her neighborhood doesn\u2019t have a fancy name.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know her favorite song, movie or food.<\/p>\n<p>At one point I thought her favorite restaurant was Xochimilco<br \/>\nBut it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n<p>I never met her parents but I know her mom is black\/Hispanic mixed and her dad is white. Her family is more diverse than mine. I\u2019m always surprised when she introduces me to her cousins.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s the middle child in her family.<br \/>\nShe doesn\u2019t quite fit in<br \/>\nat home, at school, at church, or at work though she\u2019s always the life of a party.<\/p>\n<p>She has one of those familiar faces,<br \/>\nthough there\u2019s nothing common about it.<\/p>\n<p>People think she\u2019s unintelligent because she\u2019s a single mother<br \/>\nand her English isn\u2019t perfect.<\/p>\n<p>But they forget that she speaks Arabic, Spanish, German, Greek, Chinese, street and French.<\/p>\n<p>She cooks, sings and dances better than anyone I\u2019ve ever met<br \/>\nand she works harder than anyone you\u2019ll ever meet.<\/p>\n<p>A lot of people claim to be her friend<br \/>\nbut they\u2019ve never been to her house,<br \/>\nnever met her parents,<br \/>\nand they definitely don\u2019t know her middle name.<\/p>\n<p>I want to be her friend.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t know if she\u2019s interested.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friend Who is Detroit?
