{"id":12560,"date":"2014-03-03T03:49:22","date_gmt":"2014-03-03T03:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/blog\/migueldavis\/?p=72"},"modified":"2014-03-03T03:49:22","modified_gmt":"2014-03-03T03:49:22","slug":"step-one-social-enterprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/step-one-social-enterprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Step One: Social Enterprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a few days, <a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/alexandrazisser\/\" title=\"Alexandra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alexandra<\/a> and I will take part in the first ever <a href=\"http:\/\/dhivedetroit.org\/build\/social\/\" title=\"BUILD Social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BUILD Social<\/a> course, a spinoff of D:Hive\u2019s popular BUILD program for entrepreneurs. The 10-week class will give us a chance to learn from and develop a business plan alongside the social entrepreneurs making waves in Detroit. To be accepted to the program, we had to submit a brief pitch verifying our intent to create a company with a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triple_bottom_line\" title=\"double or triple bottom line\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double or triple bottom line<\/a>. Here\u2019s a taste:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Think community center meets Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company meets SOUP meets Grand Circus Co. Beanstalk will be Detroit\u2019s first crowd-funding coffee house, bar, and workplace, providing a collaborative space for the free flow of ideas and people and a means for generating revenues to reinvest in the people, places, and ideas that are revitalizing our community.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this fundamental aim of financing the city\u2019s makers and shakers, the company will be structured as an L3C, with an undetermined percentage of profit each month going towards a partner organization in the area of education, economic development, environmental responsibility, and\/or arts and culture.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It\u2019s rough around the edges, but satisfies my love of smart people doing inspiring things and my favoritest rabble rousing substance in the whole-wide-world: coffee. It will be interesting to see how the concept evolves as we learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashoka.org\/social_entrepreneur\" title=\"social entrepreneurship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social entrepreneurship<\/a> in practice and as my partner-in-crime chimes in on behalf of my blind spots***. <\/p>\n<p>The timing for all this couldn\u2019t be better. Our last leadership development day ended with an ultimatum from the higher-ups to \u201ctake step one\u201d towards some big picture goal and, besides the experiences we\u2019ll be afforded through the course, the theme of our next 5-week Challenge Detroit project is social entrepreneurship and community innovation. <\/p>\n<p>The stars appear to be aligning so stay tuned for what\u2019s next!<\/p>\n<p>***a recent workshop with Deloitte confirmed that Alexandra\u2019s two leadership strengths are my leadership weaknesses. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a few days, Alexandra and I will take part in the first ever BUILD Social course, a spinoff of D:Hive\u2019s popular BUILD program for entrepreneurs.
