When asked to address a room full of people for Challenge Detroit’s Year Three Kickoff event I was humbled at first, then anxiety and panic consumed me with the thought of me addressing a crowd full of people who didn’t know what I’ve done, where I’ve been, or how far I’ve come to be standing in front of them telling them why I ended up here.

Public speaking isn’t one of my strengths. Quite frankly I don’t like talking about myself especially in a room full of strangers. When preparing for this fateful day weeks before, I thought about how I could connect to these people in a way that was meaningful for both of us.

The only way I really knew how to connect with others was to tell a story…my life story. I did this by sharing a part of my history that I hold near and dear to my heart. I did this first by acknowledging that we all have a storied past. I found it easier to talk about myself after realizing that we all have something we rather not share. We often share the things about ourselves that we’re comfortable with, sharing the positive things about ourselves that we feel confident in sharing, or sharing more recent things that distract others from asking about our past we rather not talk about.

My story and my history is no more important than anyone else’s. I recognize that we are all different, but I can’t help but gloss over some of the things I’ve done. I know others do, too. As I interact with new people on a regular basis, I still find myself curious to ask people what they’ve seen, what they’ve done, how far they have travelled, or asking them to share something interesting about them that sets them apart from anyone else. This is semi-hypocritical of me since I don’t even like talking about myself or answering similar questions.

It’s easy to judge someone based on what we see on the surface, or after hearing a sound byte about one’s curious past. It is important that each of us recognize that we all have a story. Many stories have a planned roadmap, others are whimsical and fairy tale-like, some are dark and full of road bumps or detours, some cause and effect stories are left to be desired and avoided. Our paths make us who we are today and tomorrow. Our stories give us something to talk about, memories to reminisce about, and reflect upon.

I found myself reflecting upon my new family in my current story— my Detroit story. In the season of gratitude and thanks I am thankful for all of them. Over time we have come to be comfortable, shared personal stories, made new memories, and learned from each other. I have come to open my heart, appreciate the journey, and embrace my new life in a city that has welcomed me with open arms.

Detroit has given me far more than I ever expected it to when I moved here just months ago. I have built strong relationships, formed great bonds, and I’m intent on staying here. I’ve learned to love my own story and enjoy the process, and I’m learning to share more of my story with those who show genuine interest. Our journeys make us who we are and we should be proud of them. Be thankful for them and those that were there to witness your growth.

I’ve never been one to boast about the things that I’ve done.
