So what\u2019s it like to live in Detroit?\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m talking about Detroit, Detroit.\u00a0 Not metropolitan Detroit, or the Detroit that\u2019s commonly mistaken for Royal Oak, Ferndale, or West Bloomfield.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about Downtown Detroit.<\/p>\n

I know, everyone has his or her perceptions.\u00a0 And I also know that many people are trying to change those perceptions.<\/p>\n

You have Quicken Loans, telling the story of opportunity<\/a> in Detroit.<\/p>\n

You have Detroit Venture Partners telling the story of Detroit 2.0<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You have the government telling the story of Detroit as a place \u201cwhere centuries of entrepreneurial DNA, 11 acres of unspoiled wilderness, and the world\u2019s longest freshwater coastline, give us plenty of room to grow<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

But what\u2019s it really like?\u00a0 That\u2019s the questions everyone always asks me about living down here.<\/p>\n

Is it scary?<\/p>\n

Is it safe?<\/p>\n

Is it fun?<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the simple truth \u2013 I didn\u2019t move here after graduation for the \u201cbright lights, big city, all looking pretty\u201d as Alicia Keys would put it<\/a>.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t move here for the glamour.\u00a0 For the prestige, or for the number of big businesses in the area.<\/p>\n

I moved here to help build these things.<\/p>\n

Detroit is a city filled with risk takers, entrepreneurs, the tough skinned.\u00a0 By definition, if you decide to move to Detroit, you must be all these things.<\/p>\n

No where else in the world can you be part of building a business scene, re-invigorating a social scene, and influencing the political scene as much as you can in Detroit.<\/p>\n

The past of Detroit is written in stone.\u00a0 The future is not.<\/p>\n

Right now, previous generations are taking the lead.\u00a0 Our parent\u2019s generation is making strategic investments.\u00a0 They are investing in the next generation.\u00a0 They are investing in us. And, we can either sit back and see how this plays out.\u00a0 Or, we can step up and realize this is a rare occurrence in history where business minds, policy minds, philanthropic minds, and community minds are all coming together to solve a problem.\u00a0 And the answer is us.<\/p>\n

So that\u2019s what it\u2019s like to live downtown.\u00a0 You wake up everyday knowing you are a solution\u00a0 – albeit a small one \u2013 to some of the world\u2019s most pressing problems.\u00a0 Poverty, race, nationality, gender, sustainability \u2013 the future of the world is being created here. Yes, it will take time but nothing worthwhile is ever easy.<\/p>\n
