{"id":1767,"date":"2014-12-04T10:06:53","date_gmt":"2014-12-04T16:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.challenge.dev2.formbox.biz\/blog\/?p=1767"},"modified":"2014-12-04T10:06:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T16:06:53","slug":"worthwhile-project-demand-work-challenge-one-reflection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/worthwhile-project-demand-work-challenge-one-reflection\/","title":{"rendered":"Worthwhile Project Demand Work: Challenge One Reflection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our first <a title=\"Challenge Detroit: Challenges\" href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenge<\/a> as Year Three Fellows partnered us with <a title=\"RecoveryPark\" href=\"http:\/\/recoverypark.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RecoveryPark<\/a>, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating jobs for\u00a0Detroiters with barriers to employment (e.g. low literacy levels, recovering addicts, returning citizens).\u00a0By converting blighted land into urban agriculture and aquaculture ventures, and growing a family of value-added food production businesses, RecoveryPark plans to create over 1,000 jobs in the next ten years which will help grow Detroit&#8217;s &#8216;local-live-fresh&#8217; food movement.<\/p>\n<p>Currently RecoveryPark is in the final stages of land acquisition (110 acres surrounding Detroit\u2019s historic Chene-Ferry Market) from the City of Detroit. As this draws to a close, reengaging the community in and around the RecoveryPark \u2018footprint\u2019 (the acquired land) is critical.<\/p>\n<p>To assist RecoveryPark in its mission, we, the fellows, were asked:<\/p>\n<p><em>How\u00a0might we utilize different mediums to creatively communicate the mission and vision of RecoveryPark, and strategize for the\u00a0coordination of\u00a0future\u00a0stakeholder (community members, businesses, city partners, non-profit partners etc.) engagement?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/recoverpark1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1768\" src=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/recoverpark1-300x211.jpg\" alt=\"recoverpark1\" width=\"300\" height=\"211\" \/><\/a>Furthermore, all of our work had to keep in mind the overarching goals for the project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Engage an otherwise disenfranchised and fragmented community in RecoveryPark development initiatives<\/li>\n<li>Creatively capture and publish the community\u2019s input<\/li>\n<li>Develop collateral pieces (graphics, info-graphics, videos, pamphlets etc.) that tell RecoveryPark\u2019s story in the community context<\/li>\n<li>Design an engaging social media strategy to establish the digital identity of RecoveryPark<\/li>\n<li>Utilize the data to drive project design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2724-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1769\" src=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/IMG_2724-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2724 (1)\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>In response, we developed inspirational creative work, amazing social media campaigns, and a variety of strategies to better engage the local community and restaurants. One such strategy focused on volunteer engagement to bring the Chene-Ferry Market back to life. Another included detailed renderings of the possibilities for the footprint. Most importantly, all ideas focused on community participation, a pillar for this particular project. It was, and is, critical for RecoveryPark to ensure that every voice of neighbors is heard and included in the development of the Market and entire neighborhood development plan. We had to work around obstacles and time constraints. We had to step outside what we know and try something new. Perhaps that\u2019s where learning happens. And, of course, worthwhile projects demand worthwhile effort.
