As an amateur musician, live music was something that I immediately sought out when I moved to Detroit. In my brief experience living in Detroit, I&#8217;ve already seen acts all over the city; The Foundation Hotel, Detroit Shipping Company, The Dirty Dog, and The London Chophouse to name a few. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23876\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23876\" class=\"wp-image-23876 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_0205-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Live Music at The Foundation Hotel.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While I\u2019ve been fortunate to see Jazz music across the city, my personal favorite Jazz club is Baker\u2019s Keyboard Lounge. Founded in 1933, Baker\u2019s is claimed to be the oldest continuous Jazz club in the world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Lounge has hosted both local legends such as Pat Flowers, and major acts from all over the world, such as Art Tatum, Miles Davis, and Nat \u201cKing\u201d Cole. Its presence is deeply rooted in Detroit\u2019s music scene and culture. In fact, Baker\u2019s was designated as an Historic Site by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office. This designation, however, does not mean it lives in the past; Baker\u2019s still hosts musicians, comics, and performers almost every night of the week. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23877\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23877\" class=\"wp-image-23877 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_2654-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Baker&#8217;s Keyboard Lounge.<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the building only seats 99 people, the listener experiences the music intimately and is closely connected with the stage. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ve had the unique opportunity of bringing my relatives to Baker\u2019s on three separate occasions. My grandfather, who was born and raised in Detroit, says he remembers hearing about Baker\u2019s, but never had the chance to attend an event. After many years, he finally got that chance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-23874\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/IMG_0030-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be sure to get there early as seats fill up quickly. The music alone is reason enough to go to Baker&#8217;s, but you won&#8217;t be disappointed by the food either.
