{"id":24132,"date":"2019-04-04T00:59:49","date_gmt":"2019-04-04T00:59:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/?p=23936"},"modified":"2019-04-04T00:59:49","modified_gmt":"2019-04-04T00:59:49","slug":"slow-detroit-summers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/slow-detroit-summers\/","title":{"rendered":"Slow Detroit Summers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Have you ever had a slow-moving relaxing day?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>That is Detroit in the summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Somehow everything slows down, in the best way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019m not sure what does it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-23937 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/belle-isle-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"317\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Maybe it\u2019s the heat.\u00a0 Especially considering that these old beautiful homes we live in the city don\u2019t have air conditioning. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But I suspect it\u2019s more than just the temperature.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There\u2019s something about the thawing out of winter.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People come out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People you haven\u2019t seen in months are sitting on their porch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Belle Isle transforms from an undisturbed snowy island to the spot.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People gather there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Whether it\u2019s laying out on the Belle Isle beach or just sitting in the car with the windows down enjoying the breeze from the Detroit river, summertime Belle Isle is buzzing. There are picnics and music and swimming and sleeping and sitting and basking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23938 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/12998309_10156790714180313_1484027486652698871_o-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The neighborhood becomes the a life-sized front porch. Windows are open, kids are<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> laughing, the sound of ice cream trucks\u2019 music resounds, pick-up basketball games are underway, and the smell of barbecue grills inaugurates the months of slowing down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It all comes together to overwhelm the senses in a way that begs you to sit back and have a tall glass of iced tea and catch up with neighbors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s incredible because during these months people still work. They still <\/span><span class=\"s1\">have families. Life still happens. But somehow, mysteriously, things feel slow.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I am not sure how it happens, but it\u2019s magical. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These slow months.
