{"id":25922,"date":"2020-07-28T03:41:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T03:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.challengedetroit.org\/?p=25922"},"modified":"2020-07-28T03:41:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T03:41:00","slug":"how-to-watch-tv-with-an-allys-mindset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/how-to-watch-tv-with-an-allys-mindset\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Watch TV with an &#8220;Ally&#8217;s Mindset&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In light of recent events and the ongoing social unrest across the country, many of us are investigating ways to become better allies.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, it is important to recogniz<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e that we can learn about injustice and the impact of privilege from more than just the news and earth shatteringly intense biopics. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In everything that we do, we can choose to be someone who is willing to be critical of \u201cthe norm\u201d, takes their own time and resources to educate themselves, and recognizes that their privilege often insulates from identifying inequity. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To invoke this \u201cally\u2019s mindset\u201d ask yourself the following questions while watching, readi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ng, or listening to, well, anything:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>How would this situation be different if the protagonist was a BIPOC and\/or in a different socioeconomic class?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Would the \u201cbad boy\u201d lead from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Vandal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> still be given the time of day to prove himself innocent if he was Black? Would the star quarterback from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Euphoria<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> still be walking around a free man if his father didn\u2019t own half the town? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Privilege and circumstance, not legitimate virtue, are often what separates us from consequence.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>What more can I learn about the underrepresented population being featured? <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oftentimes, film and television are our first real interface with a minority group. Push yourself to go beyond the narrative that one story is telling, and research to find out more about the dimensions of that group, their successes, their struggles, and what you might be able to do to advocate for their liberty and inclusion. I guarantee you<br \/>\nwon\u2019t learn everything you need to know about people on the autistic spectrum from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Atypical<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or all things LGBTQ+ from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Queer Eye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>How might this issue of the past have a lasting impact?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Historical fiction is all the rage, and that gives us a unique opportunity\u00a0<b><\/b>to immerse ourselves in a different time and place. While you\u2019re at the edge of your seat enjoying Don Draper\u2019s antics in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mad Men<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, think about how much (or how little) has changed for women in corporate America. Please, be inspired and heart-warmed by the powerful story of <em>Hidden Figures<\/em>, but don\u2019t you dare think that the institutional obstacles and attitudes of white supremacy and the patriarchy that oppressed those women disappeared in 1961.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25923 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CD-EOY-Blog-Image-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CD-EOY-Blog-Image-300x157.png 300w, https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CD-EOY-Blog-Image-1024x536.png 1024w, https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CD-EOY-Blog-Image-768x402.png 768w, https:\/\/challengedetroit.builtrare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CD-EOY-Blog-Image.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These questions aren\u2019t meant to suck the fun out of life. They\u2019re meant to help you unlearn the inequities that you may have grown to accept as fact, and to encourage you to see that even the things and people we love have room for improvement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even on other planets and in alternate universes, no story is independent of the systems of privilege and prejudice that plague our reality. This is often a beautiful thing that creates multidimensional characters, complex humor, and resonant plot lines. On the other hand, this can also romanticize real issues, and diminish the perceived severity and prevalence of prejudice to those that don\u2019t experience it.
