Day 8 was the start of taking our idea from our minds and paper to the real world.<\/p>\n<p>What Prototyping is<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The process of testing and confirming your ideas\n<ul>\n<li>Confirming your hypotheses in the real world<\/li>\n<li>David Kelley Video founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ideo.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IDEO<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Stop talking\u2014start making<\/li>\n<li>3 types of prototyping\n<ul>\n<li>Interfaces\u2014show people what it looks like\n<ul>\n<li>Start on paper<\/li>\n<li>Used a tool called Balsamic\u2014prototype on the computer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Physical Prototyping\u2014making objects\n<ul>\n<li>Physical space\u2014make sure to think about<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Systems\u2014businesses to experiences\n<ul>\n<li>i.e. pop-up shops<\/li>\n<li>Hopscotch Detroit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rules of Prototyping<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Define testing metrics\u2014what is the thing you are trying to prove (ours: trying to draw non-traditional makers to learn about making)<\/li>\n<li>Fail often to succeed sooner\n<ul>\n<li>Make as many prototypes as possible<\/li>\n<li>Make them as fast as possible<\/li>\n<li>Failing is the best learning method<\/li>\n<li>Minimum viable product\n<ul>\n<li>Have a idea and use the minimal resources to prove that people want or like your idea<\/li>\n<li>Build with Momentum\n<ul>\n<li>To solve a $5million dollar problem: make each step smaller with a little movement (instead of a giant moon shot)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After the $5 think about $50, $100, $500 etc.\u00a0 Write down what this would look like<\/p>\n<p>Also href=\"http:\/\/www.astrodetroit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Astro Coffee<\/a> (Corktown) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greatlakescoffee.com\/coffeebar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Lakes Coffee<\/a> (Midtown).<\/p>\n<p>Observation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-288\" alt=\"Day 8 1\" src=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-1.jpg\" width=\"230\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Astro was pretty busy and we found a great table to work at.\u00a0 When we arrived, we let the bartender know what we were doing and they were cool with it.\u00a0 After that, we notified everyone in the caf\u00e9, just simply telling them we were having this duck tape wallet workshop for free and if they were interested to stop by.\u00a0 We had great success, with two people making wallets from scratch and one person interested, but limited on time, and making a pre-started wallet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Guy from LA (Brandon)\u2014made a wallet<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Came in just to grab a cup of coffee<\/li>\n<li>Came from Royal Oak,<\/li>\n<li>Said in LA, people would never give the time of day to do something like this<\/li>\n<li>Looks for good tasting coffee\n<ul>\n<li>Can make a good cup of coffee if he has the right maker\u2014drinks espresso at home\n<ul>\n<li>Needs the right temp for water, commercial makers get the right temp<\/li>\n<li>Quality of the coffee beans\n<ul>\n<li>Interested to be in a coffee making workshop<\/li>\n<li>World traveler, spending months in MI, but also spent a winter in Japan<\/li>\n<li>Do you make things\n<ul>\n<li>Not really\n<ul>\n<li>Photograph\u2014hobby and passion\n<ul>\n<li>DSLR and film<\/li>\n<li>Likes coming downtown to photograph good coffee\n<ul>\n<li>Doesn\u2019t feel safe walking the streets (cant live)<\/li>\n<li>But likes to meet interesting people<\/li>\n<li>Quality of Coffee\n<ul>\n<li>Committed to the TASTE of the craft of making good coffee\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cjust needs the caffeine\u201d but can tell the difference between good v. jewlry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gary finished a half done wallet.\u00a0 He added a pocket and a brass brad rubber band clasp.\u00a0 He also added a decorative foam diamond shape attached with pink duct tape.\u00a0 I think he really enjoyed the act of making.\u00a0 He added the details to this wallet with his niece Mary Catherine in mind.\u00a0 He seems excited to give it to her (shes 10).<\/p>\n<p>Gary is running some errands before dinner in south west Detroit (including stopping for guacamole at the Honey bee Market).\u00a0 He usually goes to Caf\u00e9 con Leche on Vernor but decided to stop in to Astro for a change of scenery.\u00a0 He\u2019s happy that he did because he got to hang out with us and make a cool wallet!!\u00a0 Levon gave him some info about the breaker project and a finished wallet that he made earlier (for Garys nephew) and then Gary went happily on his way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On to Great Lakes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-289\" alt=\"Day 8 2\" src=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-2-771x1024.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Way more busy than Astro coffee, but still lively. At first we couldn&#8217;t find a large enough spot to sit at and we were worried we would have to leave.\u00a0 At the last minute we saw some people getting up and then were able to situate ourselves in the right place.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need to consider surface\u2014great lakes coffee table lacquer is coming up on the tape\u2014didn&#8217;t happen at Astro<\/li>\n<li>Put a business card in each wallet to get feedback and just give people the ability to get in touch with us<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Scott (from GP)-25\u2014made a wallet<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comes here to study\n<ul>\n<li>Gets him out of the house (lives at home while attending Med School to save money)<\/li>\n<li>GP coffee places close around 10 and GLC closes later<\/li>\n<li>Coffee and food<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<li>Used to make a little in High School\n<ul>\n<li>Shop class<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Karey (Moved here a few days ago from New Orleans)\u2014made a clutch<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good coffee and food<\/li>\n<li>Seems they know what they are doing<\/li>\n<li>Friendly<\/li>\n<li>GLC is in the middle of things\n<ul>\n<li>Seems like there is a \u201cbuzz going on\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Nice Energy\u00e0 people are drawn to that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ahmad &#8212;made a clutch for gf<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Works in Troy, loves the coffee here\n<ul>\n<li>Likes that they know his name, knew it after a month, month and a half of coming in<\/li>\n<li>Can tell the difference in the coffee compared to other places like Horotn\u2019s, Bigby<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Arbrielle \u2013made a wallet<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-290\" alt=\"Day 8 3\" src=\"http:\/\/challengedetroit.org\/isaacgilman\/files\/2013\/06\/Day-8-3-771x1024.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comes here bc of coffee, food and atmosphere\n<ul>\n<li>Does homework and hangs out<\/li>\n<li>Henry ford community college<\/li>\n<li>Price is worth the coffee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Evan\u2014made a one pocket wallet<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall it was huge success.\u00a0 We had 7 people make wallets (in about 3 hours)! Never kicked out but our biggest failure was we ran out of supplies and had to run to the store to get more duck tape.\u00a0 Although this is a success in the sense that we had people making enough wallets to need more supplies, we failed in the sense that we spent more than $5 and we noticed this would not be a sustainable practice if we had to go to the store to by $5 role of duck tape each time.\u00a0 It would be more efficient if we had the opportunity to buy mass quantities of duck tape for very little price.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Day 8 (6\/26) Reflection Dylan from Wedge Detroit came in to talk with us about Prototyping.
